RAW saw another chapter unfold in the CM Punk verses the Authority saga, as the conflict between Punk, Triple H, and Kevin Nash continued to build. There were some good moments, such as HHH’s surprise “firing” of Nash, Punk’s continual taunting of HHH, and the Game’s announcement that his match with Punk at Night of Champions would now be no DQ and his position as COO was on the line. Everything was engaging, the promos felt real, and the anticipation for the match ran high.
Except WWE shouldn’t be hyping this match right now.
What Could Have Been
The truth is, the CM Punk-HHH match will be great, but it doesn’t have as much weight to it as the Punk-Nash match that was originally promoted. That match was the ultimate example of opposites colliding. Punk has built himself up as the silver tongued anarchist of WWE, critiquing everyone in management for being stuck in the past, ignoring talented wrestlers for more camera-ready ones, and utilizing his real-life treatment by the company to pull off promos that carry weight with several “wrestling’ fans. These fans are tired of the company’s de-emphasis of wrestling and embrace Punk, who has done nothing but promote “real” wrestling. Kevin Nash is the opposite of Punk- a veteran who reached the prime of his career by ignoring new wrestlers, promoting himself and his “abilities” at the cost of other more talented wrestlers, and generally trying to live off his past glories. His backstage antics are legendary with fans and wrestlers, and most are sick of this type of wrestler. That would’ve been great by itself, but in the middle is Triple H now easing into his corporate role, trying to keep his friendship with Nash and do business with Punk despite his insults, both personal and business-related, towards HHH.
This is material that could have led to months of storylines. Nash could’ve battled CM Punk, revealed Triple H as his benefactor (which Punk has already hinted at), and after months of goading and fending off the Game’s handpicked henchmen, Punk could’ve led HHH to a match at Wrestlemania over the direction and control of the company. Instead, we’re getting that match now, and instead of a well-marinated steak, wrestling fans are running a high risk of getting a decent burger instead. Now, this is not said to belittle the talents of either of the men involved. It is said because something clearly changed the direction of what was originally Nash v. Punk, and in order to address that, we need to ask what the reasons might be.
