In the first half of 2010 British Gas made profits of £585 million, according to its parent company Centrica. The profit is an increase of 98% on last year.

British Gas Announces Profit Increase

On July 28, 2010 the BBC reported that "The company, which supplies gas to more than half of the country's households, benefited from the cold winter. Gas use rose by 8%, and the company added 400,000 residential customers, after cutting prices in February."

In the same article, the BBC commented that the Centrica group also saw a increase in profits which were "up 65% to £1.56bn". Sam Laidlaw, the chief executive of Centrica said that "This is a much bigger group than we had a year ago - a 40% increase in the size of the group as a result of the acquisitions that we did last year."
