When most people think of non-profit organizations, martial art schools do not usually come to mind. However, preserving these traditional fighting arts is vital. They contain lessons with value for self defense application as well as for the spirituality of the practitioner.

The Roots of Traditional Fighting Arts

In feudal Japan, it was necessary to have some basic knowledge of self defense. Farmers needed it to defend their homes and families. Warriors mastered the martial arts to serve their lords. Various arts were created with these needs in mind. These different systems were called “Ryu.” Masters who had spent years training and teaching developed these traditions or Ryu. The philosophy, techniques, and principals of the particular art were thus passed from master to student.

The times greatly dictated the development and longevity of a particular Ryu. Young samurai were taught weapon arts like archery and sword fighting. When the Meiji Restoration outlawed the use of weapons, emphasis was placed on empty hand combat. Despite the laws against carrying weapons, many ancient arts were preserved and used for the development of the self.
